Fire at new wing under construction at Casa Grande hospital

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a fire on the roof of a wing under construction at Banner Casa Grande Medical Center.

Casa Grande Fire Department officials say Wednesday afternoon's structure fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

They say the use of steel in the wings infrastructure helped keep the fire from spreading.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports that the roof was lined with petroleum product, which caused heavy black smoke.

Hospital officials say no patients or staff needed to be evacuated because of the fire, which was in an unoccupied area.

They say construction started recently on the wing, which will be dedicated to women and infant services.

The hospital plans to open most of the wing by next summer.
