Cottonwood toddler dies after falling out of third-story window

COTTONWOOD, Ariz. - A 22-month-old boy has died after falling from a third-story window in Cottonwood last week.

On Friday afternoon, first responders were called to building No. 7 at the Verde Vista apartment complex in the  1700 block of E. Elm Street for a report of a toddler who had fallen out of a partially open window.

“The couch inside the apartment was up against or near the window and, my understanding is, that he jumped onto the back of the couch and fell up against the screen and out the window,” said Gary Eisenga, a police commander at the Cottonwood Police Department.

The toddler was barely breathing when emergency crews transported him to Verde Valley Medical Center to be stabilized, said Eisenga. He was later flown to Flagstaff Hospital and later to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“With small children, you just need to be careful of the furniture placement and child safety locks and things of that nature,” said Eisenga.

Police say they believe this is a tragic accident and not a criminal matter. No charges have been filed against the parents of the boy or the apartment complex.

The name of the toddler has not yet been released.

Officials are still awaiting the autopsy report from Maricopa County and the incident is still under investigation, said Eisenga.
