Flu hitting Phoenix early, hard in 2017

A look at whether flu cases are higher than normal compared to last year.

Since the beginning of October, 299 cases of influenza have been confirmed in Maricopa County, according to health officials.

That's five times the number of cases at this time last year, which finished with more than 6,600 cases. In the 2015-16 flu season, the county reported 14,353 flu cases.

In addition, county officials confirmed that Maricopa County has recorded its first pediatric death from flu this season.

The 2015-16 flu season saw three pediatric deaths, while last year saw one within the county.
