Four Peaks celebrates 20 years of brewing

TEMPE, Ariz. - This weekend Four Peaks Brewery celebrated 20 years of success right here in the Valley of the Sun.

“When we started Four Peaks, basically a bunch of guys that just wanted to make good beer. We all had a love and spent time in Europe drinking great beers and wanted to bring that same flavor back here to the United States,” said Randy Schultz, a co-founder of Four Peaks.

The original brewpub is located on 8th Street in Tempe, but Four Peaks now runs a separate brewing facility.

Greg Ross, Four Peaks brand director, explains, “We reached capacity at the original brewery about five years ago. We made the decision to open up a production brewery. We wanted to keep our business located in Tempe, so we went down the road at Broadway and Roosevelt. We have got a 60-thousand-square-foot facility here. Lift our capacity to four times what we had over at our originally 8th street brewery."

Last year, Four Peaks was purchased by Anheuser-Busch; however, Four Peaks' commitment to the community and quality beer remains the same. In fact, it has improved.

“Quality of our beer has gotten a lot better, and the innovation has really grown. We have a lot more beers than we have done before,” said Schultz.

The sale of Four Peaks also helped with production numbers.

“Following our sale, which was a little over a year ago, our production capabilities at the brewery we are at right now has increased by about 30 percent. We were able to build a two-story laboratory. We now employ more than six scientists that are constantly testing the beer to make sure that it’s fresh and clean before it goes out the door,” said Ross.

As for the next 20 years, “I see Kilt Lifter across the country and beyond. We would love to see it over in Europe, down in Mexico, or all kinds of places. I do see our product eventually being a lifetime lifestyle brand for sure,” said Schultz.

Schultz recognizes the community is what has made Four Peaks the brand it is today.

“It has been an incredible journey for my partners and me and we are very proud of where we are in this community and who we represent so thank you to everybody.”
