Police: Woman stabbed, enters Mesa QT with knife lodged in back

A suspect has been arrested after a woman walked into a QuickTrip with a knife in her back.

MESA, Ariz. -  A woman is in critical condition after she was attacked and stabbed at a Mesa QuikTrip store Thursday night, police said.

According to Mesa police, officers responded to the QT on the corner of Main Street and Val Vista Drive just before midnight. They found a woman who had been stabbed with a six-inch knife.

Police said as the woman exited her vehicle to enter the QT, she was attacked without warning from behind. The suspect, later identified as 22-year-old James Narcel Heard, stabbed her in the back.

The woman, police said, entered the QT with the knife still in her back, while Heard fled the scene.

Police said a description of the suspect's clothing and appearance, as well as surveillance video led them to arrest Heard, who was spotted by police helicopter fleeing the area.

According to police, Heard admitted to stabbing the woman and told police he used meth earlier in the day.

Police said the woman did not know the suspect, making it a "senseless act of violence against her."

Heard was arrested and booked for one count of attempted second degree murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"Our thoughts are with the victim and we wish her the best in her recovery,” Mesa PD said.
