Flagstaff PD believes it has found missing Valley teacher's body

Cathryn Gorospe bailed Charlie Malzahn out of Coconino County Jail last Friday. She hasn't been seen since.

Flagstaff police announced Friday evening that they found remains believed to be Cathryn Gorospe.

The 44-year-old Valley teacher was last seen bailing Charlie Malzahn out of Coconino County Jail in Flagstaff last Friday night.

Flagstaff PD Sgt. Cory Runge said the human remains believed to be Gorospe's were found on rural land outside the limits of Coconino County by Flagstaff PD detectives, with the help of another law enforcement agency, around 5 p.m. Friday. Runge said the exact location would not be released while the scene was under investigation.

“It was not the search parties that located them, it was hard knocks by our detectives division,” Runge said.

Runge said a tip led detectives to the location.

“We did receive some information that led us to her location,” Runge said.

More details are expected to be released as early as Saturday.

Police said the lab analysis of the blood found in Cathryn’s RAV4 is still underway.  Malzhan has been a person of interest in Cathryn’s disappearance throughout the investigation.

“At this time we do believe foul play has been afoot and that Mr. Malzhan is our primary suspect,” Runge said.

Though an autopsy and medical identification of the remains found are still pending, Runge expressed his condolences to Cathryn’s loved ones.

“She meant a lot to many of the people and the lives she’s touched throughout her life and we’ve received many, many comments in reference to the warm person that she is and the contributions she has made. It is with our deepest condolences that we want to express that to them and to do everything we can to seek justice in this case,” Sgt. Runge said.

A positive identification is still pending, according to police.

Malzahn has since been arrested, suspected in a crime spree including crashing Gorospe's car after evading police and using Gorospe's credit cards, among other alleged crimes.

Gorospe's family and police have been searching the Williams area for evidence over the past several days, but police have not said where the body was found.
