ASU police: Man on statewide crime spree suspected in student's assault

Cathryn Gorospe was last seen bailing Charlie Malzhan out of a Flagstaff jail. Malzhan was arrested for driving Gorospe's vehicle and using her credit cards. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

TEMPE, Ariz. - The man questioned in Valley teacher Cathryn Gorospe's disappearance now faces charges in a physical assault against an Arizona State student in a dorm room Sunday night.

He was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail Thursday night without bond.

Charlie Malzahn already faces car theft, credit card theft, hit-and-run, assault and drug charges from just this weekend after Gorospe bailed him out of Coconino County Jail.

According to ASU police, Malzahn went into the Hassayampa Academic Village G-wing lobby with a female student, then physically assaulted her just before 10 p.m.

Tempe police suspect Malzahn committed a carjacking near Rural Road and Apache Boulevard right around the same time Sunday night.

Phoenix police took Malzahn into custody Monday after they recognized the car he was driving. He tried to flee police, but crashed the car and was arrested.

On Saturday, Tucson police contacted Malzahn when they received reports of credit card theft at the Tucson Mall. He had tried to use Gorospe's credit card to make a purchase, Flagstaff PD said.
