PHOENIX – If you live in the Valley, Yelp! or reviews on Google may come in handy when deciding where to eat.
The food options are endless, especially along 7th Street in central Phoenix.
"I think Phoenix over the last 10 years … has expanded,” said Scott Kilpatrick, the CEO of Sauce. “It's been great."
It’s certainly been good to his nine restaurant locations around the Valley, but is there a looming bubble about to burst?
Kilpatrick doesn’t believe there is.
"The casual dining chains have struggled as of late,” he said, highlighting a demand change for more unique experiences and “chef concept” restaurants.
Kilpatrick said it's always been a struggle for restaurants.
Forbes Magazine agrees, saying almost one in five restaurants closes in the first year of business.
So, perhaps watching Alice Cooper’stown, Z'Tejas and Okra close down this isn’t a sign of doom, rather a part of the long-term trend of small businesses.
Kevin Alexander, a food critic for Thrillist, doesn't agree.
In an article he wrote at the end of last year, he explains why, in reality, the whole country's “golden age of restaurants is coming to an end.”
He wrote that the current climate is “the perfect restaurant industry storm."
We’ll have to wait to find out what happens to the food scene in Phoenix in the near future.
Will there be a culinary catastrophe? That remains to be seen.
