Could Phoenix land bid for Amazon's second headquarters?

Amazon announced plans to build a second headquarters and cities across the nation have placed bids to host Amazon's HQ2.

PHOENIX - Every major city in America is trying to become the location for Amazon's second headquarters.

In the Valley, Chandler, Mesa and Phoenix are all submitting proposals before the Oct. 19 deadline.

Stories are circulating about the old Park Central Mall site as a possible location that Phoenix officials will be pitching. Its proximity to the light rail, housing and a booming tech industry could be promising, although Phoenix officials couldn’t comment on what exact site they are proposing.

If selected, Amazon will invest more than $5 billion in construction and will create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs.

Amazon’s requirements are simple: The company is looking for a location with strong local and regional talent --particularly in software development and related fields.

“The Phoenix economy is changing massively," said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. "We used to rely on growth and real estate, now we are building a more innovative tech based economy."
