Phoenix officially hit 118 degrees Friday afternoon, breaking the previous mark of 115, which was set in 1905, according to the National Weather Service Phoenix.

The city had reached a record-breaking 116 degrees around 2 p.m. Friday.
An excessive heat warning is in effect for much of the Valley until 8 p.m.

Other parts of the state are also under an excessive heat warning and experiencing record-breaking heat.
Tucson broke a 71-year-old heat record, hitting 111 just before 2 p.m.

Later in the day, scattered showers and gusty winds moved through the east Valley, kicking up some dust in east Mesa.
The Valley experienced its first rain in a couple months on Thursday night.
