Four solo home runs were enough to dig out of the hole starting pitcher Taijuan Walker and the Diamondbacks found themselves in before recording a single out Friday night.
But they weren't enough to dig any further as the Dodgers beat the D-backs 9-5 in Game 1 of the National League Divisional Series.
Walker made it out of the first inning, but Zach Godley relieved him in the second and pitched 5 innings, giving up two more runs.
By the end of the fourth, it was 7-1 Dodgers. A.J. Pollock's solo homer was the only noise for Arizona at that point.
J.D. Martinez hit a solo shot of his own in the sixth to make it 7-2.
The D-backs' big excitement came in the seventh frame when Ketel Marte and Jeff Mathis hit back-to-back line-drive home runs to left field to chase Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw from the game and bring Arizona within three runs.
But one inning later, a pair of runs from Los Angeles, including an RBI single from Justin Turner for his fifth run batted in on the night, sealed the deal.
The D-backs and Dodgers will face off again Saturday night at 6:08 p.m. from Dodger Stadium. Robbie Ray is expected to take the bump for the D-backs, facing Rich Hill.
