Darvish, Dodgers pen shuts down D-backs, finishes NLDS sweep

The bats just didn't come through for the D-backs tonight.

The Diamondbacks could not muster much in the way of offense Monday night, managing just one hit in the final game of their season.

They fell to the Dodgers 3-1, completing Los Angeles’ sweep of the National League Divisional Series and eliminating Arizona from the playoffs.

Monday night belonged to Dodgers midseason acquisition Yu Darvish. The former Texas Rangers ace had everything working in his favor, allowing just two hits over five innings.

D-backs No. 1 starter Zack Greinke was nearly as good, but barely half as efficient as Darvish, laboring though five innings, giving up three runs and walking five Dodgers on 105 pitches.

A fifth-inning homer from second baseman Daniel Descalso cut the Los Angeles lead in half, but in the next frame, Cody Bellinger -- the certain NL rookie of the year – smashed an opposite-field home run, chasing Greinke on his second pitch of the sixth.

Pinch hitter Christian Walker got on base to start the D-backs’ sixth when he was hit in the visor of his helmet by a Darvish pitch, but David Peralta hit into a 3-6-3 double play to negate the baserunner.

From there, the Dodgers bullpen cruised to finish out the victory, with closer Kenley Jansen pitching a typical no-nonsense ninth to clinch the series after allowing David Peralta to reach on a seeing-eye single.

The Dodgers will move on to face either the Washington Nationals or the Chicago Cubs in the NL Championship Series.
