D-backs fall victim to Dodgers nickel-and-dime offense, now down 2-0 in NLDS

A three-run pinch-hit homer by Brandon Drury brought the D-backs within two in the seventh inning, but the Dodgers answered back with a run of their own, and Arizona couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Dodgers’ small-ball ate the D-backs alive for a second consecutive night Saturday as Los Angeles took a commanding 2-0 lead in the National League Divisional Series with an 8-5 win.

Things looked promising early for the Diamondbacks after a two-run shot by Paul Goldschmidt gave them a lead before the Dodgers even got up to bat.

But the bottom of the Dodgers lineup came through, as Logan Forsythe, Austin Barnes and Yasiel Puig combined to go 8-for-10 with five runs scored and five batted in.

The fourth and fifth innings were the roughest for Arizona, as they gave up six runs between the two frames. Robbie Ray looked smooth early but hit choppy waters, giving up four runs in 4-1/3 innings. His relief came in the person of Jimmie Sherfy, who gave up three runs without recording an out.

Now the D-backs return home with their backs against the wall. Monday’s game begins at 7:08 p.m. as Arizona will turn to ace Zack Greinke to keep its postseason run alive.
