TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University has named Herm Edwards head football coach.
The announcement, released on ASU's athletics website, comes after reports last week said Edwards would accept the position.
Edwards was introduced Monday at a news conference, which also featured ASU President Michael Crow and Athletic Director Ray Anderson. The latter two addressed a change in philosophy in the Sun Devil football program.
"We want to recruit, we want to coach, we want to develop and we want to elevate," Anderson said.

Edwards said he's ready for the role adding "football ignites my soul."
"This is what I do," he said. "I've done this my whole life."

"I have found him to be an outstanding leader and an outstanding individual," Crow said.
The move is still pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents.
Edwards last coached the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-2006. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the New York Jets from 2001-2005.
The former defensive back made his name as a player for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1977 until 1985. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams in 1986.
He was 56-78 as an NFL coach, including a 2-4 postseason record.
Edwards has been with ESPN since 2009.
After six seasons coaching the Sun Devils, former head coach Todd Graham was fired last weekend.
