We hung out with Fernando, the first sloth at the Phoenix Zoo. He slept through the interview.

You might have heard about the new and first sloth to ever be at the Phoenix Zoo -- Fernando.

You might have heard about the new and first sloth to ever be at the Phoenix Zoo -- Fernando.

He sleeps all day, eats all day. I mean, what a life.

The Phoenix Zoo has been searching for a sloth for quite a while now.

After two years of being on the waiting list, the Phoenix Zoo finally has its sloth.

His name is Fernando and 12 News had the exclusive opportunity to meet him before the public does.

Unfortunately, Fernando was pooped, so it was pretty tough trying to get him going for the cameras.

"So basically, this is what you're going to see when you come to the zoo to visit him -- he is just going to be sleeping," said Mary Yoder, the manager of primates at the Phoenix Zoo.

Fernando sleeps all day and at night he is up and active, Mary said.

"He will get up for food. I mean, who doesn't get up for food," said Mary.

Like anybody would, Fernando woke up. He couldn't resist that apple.

"The National Aquarium in Baltimore had a sloth who was a little over a year old and after a year, they (sloths) are actually ready to move from their family groups, so he was ready to leave mom, so they contacted us," said Mary.

After the news broke about Fernando's arrival, he instantly became a celebrity within the community and on social media.

The Phoenix Zoo says Fernando is ready to be at exhibits, but officials are not sure which day just yet. So, stay tuned!
