Just six weeks after his inauguration, President Donald Trump gave an economic address to a joint session of Congress.
In contrast to his dark inauguration speech, Trump made three promises in that speech:
1. Unite to confront hate
2. Big tax cut
3. Repeal and replace Obamacare
On the first point, the president had the opportunity this August to condemn neo-Nazis after a deadly protest in Virginia. He declared both sides shared the blame, adding "you also had people that were very fine people on both sides."
Tax cuts were also high on the president's wish list. He signed a tax bill by Christmas, as he intended, and it included huge cuts for corporations and the wealthy, as well as modest cuts for average taxpayers. It also included a one-time bonus for many workers.
In July, Sen. John McCain dealt a death blow to Senate Republicans' last-ditch effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act with his dramatic thumbs-down.
Immigration was another major theme of last year's speech. We're likely to hear those ideas again in President Trump's State of the Union speech Tuesday night.
