A call from President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulating him on his re-election didn’t sit well with some Republican lawmakers, including the senators from Arizona.

In a statement, Sen. John McCain said, "An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections."

McCain, a staunch and very outspoken opponent of Putin, went on to say Trump “insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election.” This included, what McCain said were “countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin's regime.”

According to the Associated Press, Sen. Jeff Flake referred to Trump's congratulatory call as being "odd."
