PHOENIX - Phoenix police confirm the suspect shot by officers Thursday evening has died.

It began, police said, around 4:30 p.m. Thursday when an officer responded to a trespassing call near Broadway Road and 99th Avenue.

A neighbor said Jacob Uptain, 27, was walking through the neighborhood and approached several homes before going into the backyard of a vacant house.

When the officer arrived he found Uptain in the driveway of the vacant home and began talking with him.

Police said the officer noted that Uptain had a handgun and a knife in his waistband.

When Uptain was asked if he had any weapons, he revealed a second handgun, police said.

The police officer moved behind his Tahoe and asked the suspect to keep his hands up, according to the police.

Then, police said, Uptain reached for his waist and ran into the street. As the suspect approached the Tahoe, the officer fired several shots, striking Uptain.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Special Assignments Unit and a police K9 found additional weapons inside the vacant house that were not left by previous owner, according to police.

No police officers were injured in the incident.
