Meet Celestina and Mark: Siblings supporting each other

Twelve-year-old Celestina and 11-year-old Mark hope for a forever mom and dad, but, meanwhile, they have each other.

Twelve-year-old Celestina and 11-year-old Mark hope for a forever mom and dad, but, meanwhile, they have each other.

Mark says he loves his sister because “she is funny and likes the things I like.”

Celestina returns the compliment.

“What I like about my brother is that he is smart and he’s silly,” she says, smiling.

The sister and brother, now living together in a group home, have a warm and supportive relationship, says James Schlemmer, a youth advocate with Christian Family Care.

“They do a great job of taking care of each other,” Schlemmer says.

The two share a passion for the video game Minecraft and science.

Mark says science is among his favorite subjects in school because “you get to learn a lot of interesting things.”

Celestina’s love for science class reflects her love for environmental issues.

“My favorite subject would be science because I like learning about the earth and animals,” she says.

The two also share an interest in art, which was stoked during a lesson by Antoinette Cauley at the Phoenix Center for the Arts. Mark has a sketch book and a fondness for drawing comics starring Teenage Mutant Turtles. Celestina likes to create anime characters.

But each sibling does have interests that are all their own. Mark likes playing chess and writing fan fiction. Celestina devours books in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

The pair needs a two-parent household, says Schlemmer.

“Both need good one-on-one time,” he says.

Both said they want forever parents who are kind and encouraging.

“Something we would look for in a forever family is probably just acting like any other family would, since we barely experienced that kind of thing.” Celestina says.
