MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — A dust storm warning was issued for parts of Maricopa County on Friday night, and the National Weather Service said anyone driving should prepare for a sudden drop in visibility.

Blowing dust is also creating hazardous conditions in Maricopa and the surrounding areas.

The southbound lanes of Highway 347 were closed at Riggs Road due to a dust storm. Drivers are being redirected off the highway and can reenter at Casa Blanca Road.

If you are caught in a dust storm, here's what you should do:

  • Move off to the far side of the road
  • Park your vehicle
  • Turn your lights off
  • Keep your foot off the brake

Meanwhile, a new storm is brewing in the far north and west of the Phoenix metro area with the potential for heavy rain and gusting wind.

Monsoon weather has brought pouring rain and thunderstorms across Arizona. And in a year with major wildfires across the state, massive flooding has affected the northern regions like Flagstaff.

And we're not getting a break either. Moderate chances of thunderstorms are on the forecast across the Valley this weekend, and more rain is on the horizon next week.
