PHOENIX - A two-car crash closed Interstate 17 southbound at Carefree Highway early Thursday.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson said a driver, possibly impaired, was going the wrong way, which caused the wreck.
Two people suffered serious injuries, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.
Traffic was being diverted around the closure on the SR 74 off-ramp and on-ramp. Drivers were advised to expect delays.
Three of the southbound lanes reopened shortly after 5 a.m. The northbound lanes were not affected.
