Suspect runs from troopers on US 60, gets hit by car

According to DPS, the person was hit just east of Kyrene Road.

TEMPE, Ariz. - A pedestrian was struck on US 60 east of Kyrene Road Tuesday afternoon, closing westbound traffic at Mill Avenue, Arizona Department of Transportation said.

According to DPS, troopers responded to a crash without injuries around 4:30 p.m. on the westbound emergency shoulder of the US 60 east of Kyrene Road. Once they arrived, they learned one of the people involved in the crash had a felony warrant and an order of protection against him.

As troopers continued to investigate, they found that the person protected by that order was in the car with the suspect, according to DPS.

DPS said the 21-year-old man was detained, handcuffed and placed into a patrol car while troopers confirmed the warrant and protection order.

Another trooper arrived on scene to get a statement from the suspect while the first trooper investigated the crash.

According to DPS, while the troopers were moving the suspect from one patrol car to another, he broke free and ran into the right lane of traffic. DPS said he was struck by at least one vehicle.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The driver who struck the man sustained minor injuries during the collision.

The crash closed the westbound lanes of US 60 at Mill Avenue, Arizona Department of Transportation said. All traffic exited at Mill Avenue.
