PHOENIX — A sergeant with the Gilbert Police Department has sustained serious injuries, including a broken neck, after a vehicle hit his motorcycle then fled the scene, officials said.

Sgt. Tom Edgerton was off-duty when he was riding his privately owned motorcycle around 12:30 a.m. on the southbound 101 freeway, near the Talking Stick exit, in north Scottsdale, when a vehicle rear-ended him, police said.

Officials said the vehicle drove away after the crash but the driver was later found and apprehended for a DUI and leaving the scene of a collision.

Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Colton Sattler on Monday.

Edgerton was transported to Honor Health Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition with several broken bones.

The southbound lanes of Loop 101 near McDonald Drive in the East Valley were closed for about two hours while detectives investigated the scene. The highway is now reopened.

Sattler was charged with one count each of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
