Phoenix fire officials said two people are dead after a wrong-way crash on State Route 51 in Phoenix Tuesday evening.

A fire spokesperson said both people were drivers in separate vehicles.

An Arizona DPS spokesperson said a red sedan started driving west in eastbound lanes of I-10 from Sky Harbor around 7:45 p.m. That car hit a white sedan that was transitioning from southbound State Route 51 onto eastbound I-10.

The wrong-way driver appears to be an older man, according to DPS. The other driver appeared to be younger.

One person is being taken from the scene with minor injuries to a hospital from a third vehicle.

Southbound traffic is closed at Interstate 10 while police investigate. According to DPS, the area should reopen around 1 a.m.
