Arizona State University has lost one of its most iconic sports figures.

The university's athletic department confirmed Thursday morning that former coach Frank Kush had passed. He was 88.

"Our thoughts are with his family," the department tweeted.

The Sun Devil community and others mourned the loss of Kush all over social media Thursday.

Kush coached the Sun Devils from 1958 to 1979 leading the team to nine conference titles and posting undefeated seasons in 1970 and 1975, according to the Pac-12 Network‏.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995.

The field at Sun Devil Stadium is named in his honor.
