Tickets for Game 5 of the National League Division Series in Washington are going for above face value, but the market for parking ahead of Thursday’s decisive Nationals-Dodgers contest rake in more capital.
Standing-room only seats for the 8:08 p.m. ET game at Nationals Park started at about $60 on the secondary market as of Wednesday. Spots in the parking areas controlled by the Nationals began at $136 for a lot blocks from the park and the cheapest spot at a parking garage attached to the stadium was listed for $201 on StubHub.
As of Wednesday morning, the average price of a ticket sold for the sold-out Game 5 averaged $137 on the secondary market, according to ticket-tracking and sales site SeatGeek. Ticket prices for this series have lagged behind the other division series with seats going for as cheap as $10 at Dodger Stadium for Game 4. Leading up to Game 2 in Washington – which was ultimately postponed a day because of rain – seats went for as little as $20 on StubHub.
SeatGeek spokesperson Chis Leyden told USA TODAY Sports that while the Nationals could clinch their first postseason series victory on Thursday, he doesn’t expect prices to rise beyond what tickets went for in the 2012 and 2014 NLDS.
“I think Nationals fans are used to reaching this stage of the playoffs,” Leyden said. “It looks like they may want to stay home and see if their team advances. If they advance, I centrally think there is going to be huge demand. This is a similar situation from what we’ve seen from the Toronto Blue Jays, another team that has been in the playoffs consistently. This is good news for the die-hard Nats fans who want to see that game.”
The most expensive NLDS games to get into were Games 1 and 2 in Chicago, which went for an average of $306, according to SeatGeek. The Cubs await the winner of the Nationals-Dodgers series after clinching spot in the National League Championship Series with a victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
The Nationals encourage fans to use public transportation, although the rail system has been plagued by issues and may not even be a feasible option for most fans. While there is no planned track work on Metrorail for the line that stops at the ballpark, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority spokesperson Morgan Dye told USA TODAY Sports that the system will shut down as scheduled at midnight.
The first four games of the series have averaged nearly four hours.
