SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- Shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday, a wrong way driver struck the concrete wall of the off ramp of State Route 101 at McDowell Road in Scottsdale.

This incident is added to a list of numerous wrong-way driver situations in recent months, which caused Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to call for a more serious address to the issue in a statement released last week.

Podave Riley, 25, was arrested after traveling southbound on the northbound exit ramp when he crashed into the concrete barrier to avoid striking a vehicle exiting the freeway. Court documents confirm Riley was driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to court documents, both victims feared they would be injured by the wrong-way driver.

Salt River Police stopped the suspect. Officers said they found Riley had an odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a heavy sway, court documents read. A Preliminary Breath Test measured Riley’s blood alcohol content at .174.

According to court documents, Maricopa County Superior Court had an active arrest warrant on Riley for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia with a $500 bond.
