SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Scottsdale Fire Department responded to a fire call around 5:30 a.m. near Camelback and Hayden roads on Sunday.

When they arrived, firefighters found flames and smoke spewing out from the back of a two-story townhome.

Firefighters rescued a woman on the first floor by the kitchen and found her pet poodle on the second floor bed. The dog was dead.

Life-saving efforts were attempted on scene before the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, Scottsdale police said.

The victim's name is not being released until family is notified.

Neighbors were evacuated as a preventive measure but police say fire crews were able to keep the fire contained to the primary structure.
