So many questions, so few answers. Around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night, a wrong-way driver killed himself and another driver.

The crash happened on the southbound transition ramp from State Route 51 to Interstate 10. DPS says the driver started going the wrong way on Sky Harbor Boulevard at the airport. He drove the wrong way up the I-10 off-ramp and then cut across four lanes of traffic to access the transition ramp.

The HOV ramp is a single-lane ramp with walls on both sides. There is a small amount of space between the lane and the walls to swerve and avoid a wrong-way driver.

He hit a white sedan driven by 54-year-old Young Lee, killing both drivers.

12 News drove the same route, going in the correct direction, as the wrong way driver. It does not appear there are any warning signs of any kind when entering the airport off-ramp or the I-10 off-ramp.

According to DPS, 911 calls started coming in when the driver was getting on I-10. A DPS Trooper says the agency received multiple calls about the driver. The first call came in at 7:44 p.m. The crash happened at 7:47 p.m.

It’s unclear if the wrong-way driver was impaired.
