A Valley teenager had a very special idea for her recent birthday.
Instead of asking for birthday presents, Alyssa, asked for donations to a local animal shelter.
Alyssa raised funds for Arizona Animal Welfare League, a no-kill shelter that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes dogs, cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected.
“I decided to do it because I love animals,” Alyssa said on 12 Today.
Together with her friends, who are all under the age of 18, she raised over $1,000 for AAWL.
“I know what I do is important, but when I see the younger generation making that difference in their community… it’s so cool to see them make that difference,” said Michael Morefield with AAWL.
Alyssa sets a good example that you don’t need to wait for Giving Tuesday, you can give all year round.
Morefield suggests finding a local charity that you are passionate about to give to, just like Alyssa did.
“That’s how these organizations survive,” he said.
