'Tide Pod' themed doughnuts popular at Tempe shop

It's filled with a forbidden fruit filling.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Remember that old childhood game - You ask your friend if they want a donut. They said, “Yes.” Then you punched them in the arm and said, “Hurts, don’t it?”

So, it’s easy to see the folks at the ‘Hurts Donut Company’ in Tempe have a creative sense of humor. The donut shop has over 60 donut flavors: The Eminem inspired ‘Slim Shady,’ A chocolate donut with vanilla icing and M&Ms, ‘The Cookie Monster,’ ‘The Chewbacca.'

Two weeks ago, the donut shop came out with a Tide Pod themed donut. The frosting is colored like the familiar Tide Pod - white, blue and orange swirl and filled with forbidden fruit filling.

“It kind of started mostly as something laughable. We kind of picked up on the ‘Tide Pod Challenge.’ You know a lot of people were getting hurt and ending up in hospitals vomiting, stuff like that. I said, ‘Hey, let’s do a safe alternative like that.’ That’s basically how it started,” said Walter Montante, owner of the Hurts Donut Company.

The donut was originally meant to be a one- or two-day feature. It’s since turned out to be one of the more popular donuts. Montante says they are producing around 15 dozen a day. Offices to college students are ordering them.

“They gotta try it. We've had a bunch of college students come in, buy them and take them back to their dorm and videotape a safe alternative to the Tide Pod Challenge. It's been a lot of fun. It's been interesting,” said Montante.

The Tide Pod themed donuts are not meant to profit off anyone’s misery. Montante says they’re just meant to be lighthearted fun. He’ll continue to make them as long as there is interest.
