PHOENIX – People visiting the Phoenix Zoo may have been treated to a very uncommon sight, according to a zoo blog post Wednesday.

According to the post, a bird keeper heard that a swan was spotted at the Children’s Zoo Lake and grabbed his camera to take some photos. The photo attached to this story is one of the pictures he captured.

After examining the multiple photos, zoo staff members determined that it may have been a juvenile trumpeter swan.

Trumpeter swans are a rare sight in Arizona, with only a handful of recorded sightings in the state, according to the Arizona Bird Committee. Before the photos at the zoo were taken, a trumpeter swan has never been seen in Phoenix.

The trumpeter swan is the world’s largest species of waterfowl and the heaviest flying bird in North America, according to the Phoenix Zoo.

The Arizona Bird Committee is reviewing the photos to determine if it indeed is the first trumpeter swan sighting in Phoenix.
