PHOENIX - Phoenix police are investigating after two people were shot at a Phoenix motel Friday morning. One later died at the hospital.

According to police, officers were investigating a criminal damage call when they heard shots being fired in the area of 25th and Van Buren streets.

A witness directed them to a motel room at the Airport Inn where a male victim had been shot in the head.

He was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition, police say, but was later pronounced dead.

Police say officers were approached by a second man who had been injured in the shooting. His injuries are not life threatening.

Witnesses in the room have inconsistent statements, police say, due to "possible illegal activity."

The investigation is ongoing.
