PHOENIX - Melrose Liquor, a bright pink and turquois historic building is safe from demolition, for now.

The store was constructed in the 1950s and was scheduled to be demolished by P.B. Bell, the developer of an apartment building next door.

The plan for the lot: turn it into a dog park and have extra parking.

A petition online called for opponents to save a part of the Melrose curve history. Led by Stacey Champion, an advocate for historic preservation, the petition has garnered 1,400 signatures.

In a special meeting on Monday night, the community met with the developers and city officials to discuss options. As a result, Bell pulled the demolition permit and will look at all options including preserving the building.

The plan for the six-decades-old building is not final.
