TEMPE, Ariz.- Tempe-based homebuilder company Fulton Homes and partner KSLX radio station are giving away free dog booties at a Valley PetSmart location this weekend.

Fulton Homes and KSLX will hand out dog booties at the PetSmart on Tatum and Shea boulevards from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Cause for Paws program was designed to make Valley residents aware that walking dogs on concrete and pavement from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. can cause pain and injury to pets' paws, Fulton Homes said. This is the fifth year the campaign has run.

Since cement and asphalt absorb heat, sidewalks and roads tend to be hotter than the temperature of the air outside, making those booties a necessity during the summer.

Studies have shown that a dog's paw can burn after 5 minutes on a 120-degree surface, after one minute on a 140-degree surface, and almost immediately on a 150-degree surface, Fulton Homes said. Burns can leave permanent nerve damage on a dog's paw.

The first 50 people to attend the event on Saturday will receive a free pair of booties.
