The Valley of the Sun had a warm Thanksgiving, and a Mesa event is changing plans due to the record temperatures.
Downtown Mesa announced they cannot open their outdoor ice skating rink Friday. The Merry Main Street tree lighting and market will continue as planned.
The 5,000 square-foot rink is now scheduled to open Saturday as part of Downtown Mesa's holiday street festival. The festival is open through Jan. 5. See the calendar of special festival events here.
The festival is along Main Street, from Country Club to Mesa Drive.
Friday's activities include music, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a visit from Santa Claus, and arts vendors. The program starts at 5:45 p.m. at 1 N. Macdonald.
Once the ice skating rink opens Saturday, it will be open 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on week days and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. See the holiday schedule here. It costs $10 per person.
The Phoenix area hit 87 degrees Thursday, tying a record set in 1950.
Above-average temperatures are expected to continue until Tuesday. The average for this time of year in the Valley is around 72 degrees.
