Day camps available for Arizona kids displaced by walkout

If your child's district plans to close its schools, multiple businesses are stepping in to provide enrichment programs during the walkout.

PHOENIX - After educators announced they would be walking out starting Thursday, places across the Valley are offering day camps and child care to help out students' families.

School employees said they plan to continue their walk-ins on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before walking out Thursday.

Note: Some of these day care options may be filled up due to demand. Make sure to call the camp ahead of time to reserve a spot.

Arizona Science Center

Day camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting Thursday, April 26 until the teacher walkout has ended.

The camps are available for kindergarten through fifth-grade students at $40 per day.

Before and after care is also available for $15 per day with drop-off beginning at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up ending at 6 p.m.

Arizona Humane Society

The Animal Adventure Day Camp provides hands-on activities, games and animal interactions to teach kids about domestic and exotic animals.

The registration fee is $50, and it's $10 for aftercare from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

AZ on the Rocks

A local rock climbing gym is offering day camps for first to eighth graders from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and costs $50 per child.

They must bring their own packed lunch, and waivers are required to be filled out by the parents.

Arizona Animal Welfare League

Parents can drop off their kids at the animal shelter's education center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a day camp filled with hands-on animal presentations, arts and cragts for shelter animals and guest speakers who will talk about animal welfare and animal-related careers.

It costs $55 for the camp and $10 for before- or after-care. Call 602-273-6852 ex. 122 to register.

Boys and Girls Club Metro Phoenix

Starting Thursday clubs will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Clubs will also be open to nonmembers for $20 per day.

Clubs will serve lunch and snacks, but not breakfast.

Space is limited.

Chandler Children's Choir

The choir is hosting a day camp Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

They'll sing and receive music instruction, as well as watch The Greatest Showman, play games and participate in arts and crafts.

Campers wil need to bring a sack lunch but snacks will be provided.

Chandler Unified School District

The district will have its Kids Express childcare program at three of its schools during the walkout. The program will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The program costs $32 per day and is offered to any student in the Chandler Unified School District, though families already enrolled will be prioritized.

City of Peoria

The city is opening three sites for drop-in recreation care: Peoria Sports Complex, Rio Vista Recreation Center, and the community center located at 8335 W. Jefferson St.

Those locations will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. More days will be available if the walkout extends into next week.

The care cost $25 per-day and registration is required. A release from the city said priority will be given to kids already registered for the AM/PM programs.

City of Tempe

Kid Zone will be holding day camps on Thursday and Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Broadmor, Rover, Fuller and Waggoner elementary schools. Students can be registered until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Boys & Girls Club is offering a day camp for $20 a day at Westside Multi-Generational Center.

The Escalante Community Center is opened from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday for drop-in programming for kids ages 6-17.

Tempe Public Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday for drop-in programming for teens ages 12-17.

The Kiwanis Recreation Center is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

KTR Family Action Sport Center

The KTR centers in Chandler and Mesa will be open at a 8 a.m. Thursday offering special individual and family rates.

Life Time Fitness

Life Time Fitness is offering School Break Camp for kids between 4 and 12 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids will need to register with the individual club's activity center. Walk-ins and non-members are welcome.

You'll need to send your child with a lunch, and they should wear athletic shoes and bring a swimsuit.

Musical Theatre of Anthem

Care for kids ages 5-12 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

Phoenix Herpetological Society

The reptile sanctuary in Scottsdale is holding a day camp on Thursday and Friday. The full-day campe will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and has been discounted from $75 per child to $50 per child.

Care before and after camp is also available starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. for additional $15 per hour.

Phoenix Parks and Rec

City of Phoenix recreation centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for kids between 6 and 17 years old.

There wil be board games, sports, arts and crafts, and movies at various locations.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, and you can do that on the Phoenix Parks and Rec website.

Royal Impact Cheer and Dance Academy

A staff member with Royal Impact CDA says the studio will be open for children with fun activities. It costs $25 for the camp and for additional information, you can call 480-299-7390.

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center of Phoenix South Mountain

The Kroc Center will be providing child care for children ages 5 through 12 during the walkout. Supervision will be available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., two meals and snack will be provided and the daily cost will be $25. There are 100 spaces available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Skateland Mesa

Skate rental plus breakfast, lunch, snacks and tokens will cost $25.

Southwest Gymnastics

Staff at Southwest Gymnastics will be operating a day camp Thursday and possibly Friday if there is interest from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be activities, games, gymnastics, lunch, snacks and a movie.

It'll cost $25 per day per student.

Valley of the Sun YMCA

The Valley of the Sun YMCA will open regional childcare sites during the teacher walkout. According to Valley of the Sun YMCA, kids in care will experience everything from games and arts and crafts to S.T.E.M projects, sports, special events and more. Kids will be provided morning and afternoon snacks, but must bring a nonperishable lunch.

Washington Elementary School District

Childcare will be available through KidSpace School Closure Camp at 13 locations for $20 per day, per child during the walkout. Free breakfast and lunch at all 32 schools.

Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

Daily child care will be available Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for up to 200 children ages 5-12. Care will include two meals and a snack. This care option could potentially extend into next week, based on need.
