CACTUS CITY, California - Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol responded to a fiery collision on the Interstate 10 involving a big rig and a charter bus carrying a Mesa cheerleading team.
The big rig was fully engulfed in flames following the accident with the bus full of 30 or more cheerleaders from the Mesa division of the California All-Star Cheer team, according to 12 News partner KMIR News in Palm Springs. The accident happened on the eastbound I-10 near Cactus City, California.
“They appear to be shaken up, but we’re taking care of them," he said. "We’ve got them in the shade and we’re providing them fluids and we have vans showing up to transport them to their final destination.”
Authorities said three cheerleaders and the driver suffered minor injuries. Medics took them to a hospital to get checked out. The driver of the truck was not injured.
Sources at the scene told KMIR that the cheerleading team was returning to Mesa from a camp at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The California All Stars Facebook page says the team is considered the top program in the region and the a top-3 program nationwide with more than 750 awards and uncompromised quality.
