GLENDALE, Ariz. - First responders took a teenage boy to a hospital Thursday afternoon after he was hit by a car while riding his bike in Glendale.

The crash happened near 57th Avenue and Union Hills Drive.

Police initially said his injuries were life-threatening. They since said officials at the hospital say the boy is expected to survive.

According to police, he was not wearing a helmet and he was crossing in front of traffic. The driver remained at the scene and police do not believe speed or impairment led to the crash.

His parents have been notified of the crash.

Union Hills Drive is shut down eastbound at 59th Avenue and westbound at 57th Avenue for the time being.

Police advised using alternate routes.
