Arizona thieves steal, damage veteran's wheelchair

GLENDALE, Ariz. - A couple is asking for the public's help in tracking down a pair of thieves caught on security camera stealing a wheelchair from their front yard off 43rd and Grovers avenues.

Brad Soden is the creator of Tankchair, a custom-made electric wheelchair suitable for outdoor terrain, and had finished up a chair intended for a Korean War veteran in Washington.

Soden says the veteran was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and the man's wife reached out asking for help.

The chair was parked outside the in the driveway around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Soden's security cameras captured two people looking at the chair before one hopped in the seat and drove off.

A few hours later, a newspaper delivery person recognized the chair, abandoned a few blocks away, and alerted Soden. The chair sustained considerable damage and is no longer operable.

A second chair is being fixed that will be sent to the veteran.

The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incident. Anyone who saw anything suspicious or knows who stole the wheelchair is being asked to contact authorities.
