8-year-old and father in critical condition after incident involving fire pit

According to firefighters, it was some sort of explosion involving flammable liquids and an open flame.

PHOENIX - Firefighters said an 8-year-old girl and her father were taken to a local hospital in critical condition after an incident involving a fire pit in the front yard of their North Phoenix home.

It happened near Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley Drive Saturday.

Crews said the 8-year-old is being treated for burns to her torso and lower extremities, and the father, a man in his mid-40s, is being treated for burns to his wrists and legs.

According to firefighters, it was some sort of explosion involving flammable liquids and an open flame.

Fire crews said it is unclear whether the flame was a cooking fire, warming fire, or a fire simply for ambience.

Police are investigating the incident.
