PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Transportation said Interstate 17 southbound north of Black Canyon City is back open Sunday night after a crash closed it for nearly nine hours.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a truck pulling a cattle trailer failed to stop for congested traffic and rear-ended and side-swiped about 23 passenger vehicles.

Troopers said 17 total patients were taken to hospitals -- four by air and 13 by ground. The injuries range from moderate to serious.

The cattle appeared to be OK, troopers said.
