TEMPE, Ariz. - The eastbound lanes of Loop 202 were closed at State Route 143 Thursday morning after a two-vehicle crash near Priest Drive.

The crash happened around 3:40 a.m. and involved a Ford Mustang and a SUV.

According to DPS, the driver of the Ford Mustang was ejected. That person was taken to a hospital in "serious condition" with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was alert and talking before they were taken to a hospital, DPS said.

According to DPS, the Ford Mustang was facing the wrong way in the HOV lane at the time of the collision.

DPS said investigators are still trying to determine if the crash involved a wrong-way driver.

ADOT said the closure would last through the morning commute and drivers should use an alternate route. The lanes reopened around 9 a.m.

The westbound lanes of Loop 202 were not affected in the area of the crash.
