A Tucson restaurant well-known for its Sonoran hot dogs is getting national attention in the food world in the form of a James Beard award.

El Güero Canelo was recently honored by the James Beard Foundation -- becoming one of five restaurants in the United States to receive the "America’s Classics" award for 2018.

According to the foundation's website, the "America’s Classics" award is given to regional restaurants that "are cherished for their quality food, local character, and lasting appeal."

Daniel Contreras, owner of El Güero Canelo, opened his first hot dog stand in Tucson in 1993, according to the restaurant's website.

The restaurant now has four locations -- three in Tucson and one in west Phoenix -- spreading the Sonoran hot dog love across the state.

El Güero Canelo posted on Facebook that it was "honored" to receive the award.
