PHOENIX - After months of fielding suggestions and narrowing down options, an Arizona agency has made a decision critical to the safety of Arizonans.
Which jokes will tell you how to drive on Arizona freeways?
The Arizona Department of Transportation has selected two winners in its safety message contest, and you'll see them on the overhead signs of freeways across the state:
THAT'S THE TEMPERATURE - NOT THE SPEED LIMIT
SINGLE IN HOV? GET A REAL DATE, NOT A COURT DATE
The winners, Ashley Servatius and Jim Atkinson, are both from Phoenix, according to ADOT.
“A friend and I were driving and she was alarmed because she thought I was driving 101 miles per hour,” Servatius told ADOT. “Little did she know, that was my temperature gauge and not my speedometer. It was a good laugh.”
Atkinson told ADOT he (and we assume other drivers) does not find HOV lane violators attractive.
“Plus, when you’re cruising down the road and other drivers see you,” he said, “you just look bad.”
ADOT said it received more than 6,700 submissions and saw more than 8,000 votes on the 20 messages that were considered finalists.
If your message didn't win, don't worry -- ADOT could still use it later.PHOTOS: 13 best ADOT freeway sign gags
