White Mountain Apache Tribe Emergency Management has issued a pre-evacuation notice for the communities of Canyon Day and Cedar Creek due to the Hilltop Fire that began on San Carlos Apache Reservation.

The lightning-caused fire began June 25 and has burned 8,652 acres and is 5 percent contained as of Sunday.

The fire, located north of San Carlos, is threatening cultural and natural resources, recreation areas, watershed and wildlife habitat.

The Gimme Fire, also burning north of San Carlos, is at an estimated 432 acres. That fire is completely contained and is in monitor status.

Crews are managing the fires with federal and tribal resources.
