CHINO VALLEY, Ariz. – Authorities in Chino Valley say two people were arrested after a 10-year-old child was found not breathing.
According to the Chino Valley Police Department, the child's back, torso, legs, arms, neck and head were covered in bruises. He also had both second- and third-degree burns on various parts of his body.
"The burns that were severe yesterday, we do believe occurred yesterday," said Lieutenant Vincent Schaan with the Chino Valley Police Department. "There are bruises older in nature and are obviously not from yesterday."
The boy was taken to a hospital and eventually flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital in extremely critical condition, police said.
Daniel Terry, 36, and his girlfriend, 34-year-old Julianna Moreno, were arrested for attempted first-degree murder, child abuse and aggravated assault. Lt. Schaan said the couple changed their stories multiple times when questioned by police and claim they were disciplining their child.
According to police, evidence shows the child suffered his injuries while he was “bound and restrained.”
Police said the boy was unable to protect himself or run to safety.
The investigation is ongoing.
