COTTONWOOD, Ariz.- Officers from the Cottonwood Police Department arrested a man Saturday evening after a witness reported a man dragging a dog tied to the back of his truck, police said.
According to police, officers stopped 52-year-old Clarkdale, Arizona resident Destry Lynn McClure and found his 4-year-old Chihuahua, Leia, had been dragged for about half mile. He told officers that he forgot she was back there.
Leia was taken to a local veterinary office and is being treated for her injuries, which mostly include road rash, police said. She will spend the next 24 to 48 hours in the vet's care.
“I’m amazed little Leia survived being dragged on pavement for approximately half a mile, let alone appears to only have suffered road rash injuries”, said Cottonwood Spokesperson, Sergeant Monica Kuhlt in a press release.

Cottonwood police said they suspect McClure may have been under the influence of alcohol and maybe prescription drugs. He was booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center on charges of animal cruelty and driving under the influence. Additional charges may be added depending on blood test results.
