How would a government shutdown affect Arizona?

All federal parks, including the Grand Canyon, would be closed during a government shutdown.

Lawmakers are up against the clock as a government shutdown looms.

A similar deadline was extended last month when legislators passed a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded another month. That deadline ends this Friday at midnight.

While federal lawmakers are trying to hash out a budget, state lawmakers are preparing for the fallout. Here in Arizona, a shutdown would impact several civilian workers at military bases and almost all federal workers.

But Friday, the Trump administration and Gov. Doug Ducey said the Grand Canyon will not shut down.

Any shutdown would impact thousands of people in Arizona. All federal government employees could be furloughed or asked to come to work without any guarantee they will be paid in the short term.

All federal parks, including the Grand Canyon, would be closed during a government shutdown. A shutdown, however, does not impact the U.S. Postal Service but it does hit agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, meaning if you want a gun permit, you’ll have to wait.

Critical services like Social Security, air traffic control and the TSA will continue to be funded even if employees are not.
