TUCSON, Ariz. - Two U.S. citizens were arrested during separate alleged attempts to smuggle about $145,000 worth of methamphetamine and marijuana across the border over the weekend.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers inspecting vehicles coming in from Mexico Saturday referred an 18-year-old Phoenix resident for an additional inspection of the 2002 Chrysler sedan he was driving.
Officers said the subsequent search by a CBP canine turned up packages of meth concealed between the vehicle’s rear seat and trunk worth more than $40,600.
On Monday, CBP officers were again inspecting inbound vehicles when their canine brought their attention to a 2003 Ford truck belonging to a 64-year-old man from Clarkdale, Arizona.
Both suspects were arrested for narcotics smuggling and were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
Officers also seized the drugs and vehicles, according to CBP.
